"Controra" known as "House of Shadows" is a physiological thriller. Filmed in Puglia in the South of Italy and in Bolzano in North Italy. At mid-day, when the sun is directly over head and at it’s hottest point. Parents used to tell their children that it was unsafe to go outside at this time because your soul could be taken by the shadows. Director, Rossella De Venuto spent most of her childhood holidays in Puglia and knew the area very well. The medieval towns of Giovinazzo and Mofetta were some of the locations used. The lack of cars and commercialism put the film into a timeless zone
Shooting with the Arri Alexa helped deal with the extremes in latitude. From very bright light on white stone and very dark shadows in the same frame.
The Italian crew were so good. Their approach and attitude to the work was brilliant. Very laid back but very efficient at the same time.
